Our
City - Nafplio in Argolida Greece
Nafplio was the
first
capital of Greece during its recent history. It attracts a great number
of tourists every year.
The Medieval
castles,
the neoclassical buildings as well as the alleys paved with stone and
full of vougainvilleas create a marvelous spectacle and reveal the
city's long history.
According to Greek
mythology, Nafplio was named after the son of Poseidon and Amimoni.
Archeological
research
has revealed that Nafplio has been inhabited even since the
Premycenaean period.
The monuments that
one
should visit are:
* the castle of
Palamidi which is located on top of a hill. Its famous of the marvelous
view of the city.
* Akronafplia, the acropolis of the city.
* Mpourtzi, a Venetian castle built over a strip of land in the harbor
of Nafplio.
* numerous churches of great historical significance and architectural
beauty, such as Agios Spiridonas that was built in the 18th century and
outside of which Capodistrias, the first Greek governor was murdered.
* The statue of a lion that is located at the area of Pronia and was
created on King's Othon demand to honor the memory of the Bavarian
people that died in Greece.
* At the center of the city, one may admire the Sintagmatos Square, the
Turkish Mosque, the neoclassical buildings, the first Greek secondary
school as well as the first cadet school where nowadays a war museum
has been established. In addition, worth visiting are the local
library, the first Greek Parliament and numerous monuments and statues
of the generals of the Greek revolution against Turks.
* The Archeological museum, established at a Venetian building which
was constructed in 1713. One can admire rare artifacts of the Mycenaean
period.
* The Peloponisian folkloric foundation of B. Papandoniou, the most
important folkloric foundation of the Greece which has also been
awarded as the first and biggest folkloric museum of Europe.
Nafplio is an ideal
city for entertainment. At the stone paved alleys of the old city one
may come across numerous traditional coffee-houses and patisseries as
well as picturesque cafes and small taverns.
Having Nafplio as a
starting point, one may visit within a few kilometers distance, the
archeological site of Argos, Tirintha, the ancient theater of Epidavros
as well as Mycenae one of the most glorious cities of the most glorious
cities of the ancient Greek civilization.
